My Incredible Journey: Kaziranga Meghalaya Tour Package Experience

When I first looked into exploring Northeast India, I wanted a trip that offered both the wild beauty of forests and the serene charm of hills and waterfalls. That’s when I came across the Kaziranga Meghalaya Tour Package—and honestly, it turned out to be one of the most memorable trips of my life.

This package gave me the best of both worlds—Meghalaya’s cloud-kissed landscapes and Kaziranga’s wild heart. Here’s a detailed, day-by-day account of my unforgettable experience.

Day 1: Exploring Shillong – The Gateway to Meghalaya

I started my journey in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, often referred to as the "Scotland of the East". The fresh mountain air, colonial-era architecture, and cozy cafés immediately charmed me. I had a full day to soak in the local vibes.

Things I did in Shillong:

  • Walked around Ward’s Lake and enjoyed a boat ride.

  • Visited Don Bosco Museum for an immersive experience into Northeast India’s culture.

  • Took in the views from Shillong Peak and stopped at Elephant Falls.

  • Ended the day with dinner at a café in Laitumkhrah.

The first day set the tone for the rest of my Kaziranga Meghalaya Tour Package—easy-paced, immersive, and incredibly scenic.

Day 2: Cherrapunji – Waterfalls, Caves, and Cloudscapes

The next morning, we drove to Cherrapunji, about 2 hours from Shillong. Known as one of the wettest places on Earth, it truly felt like I was driving into the clouds.

Top highlights from Cherrapunji:

  • Nohkalikai Falls – The tallest plunge waterfall in India. The mist and the sound were mesmerizing.

  • Arwah Caves – A short trek into ancient limestone caves with fossils and natural formations.

  • Mawsmai Caves – Narrower and more adventurous than Arwah.

  • Seven Sisters Falls – Multiple parallel streams flowing from a cliff.

After a long day, we returned to Shillong and spent the night there. The ride back was peaceful, with the fading light making the hills glow softly.

Day 3: Mawlynnong & Dawki – The Cleanest Village and Crystal Waters

This day was something I had been looking forward to for a long time. First, we drove to Mawlynnong, dubbed Asia’s Cleanest Village. The place lived up to the hype—bamboo dustbins, clean walkways, and friendly locals everywhere.

We then continued to Dawki, located near the Bangladesh border, where the Umngot River flows. I went on a boat ride, and it honestly felt like the boat was floating on air because the water was so clear.

Experiences of the day:

  • Walking through Mawlynnong’s neat lanes.

  • Climbing the bamboo Sky Viewpoint.

  • Boating on the crystal-clear waters of Dawki.

By evening, we returned to Shillong to prepare for the next part of the Kaziranga Meghalaya Tour Package—the wildlife adventure.

Day 4: Shillong to Kaziranga – Into the Wild

We started early for Kaziranga National Park in Assam. The drive took around 6 to 7 hours, but it was smooth and picturesque. We passed through charming towns, tea gardens, and small markets.

We reached Kaziranga by late afternoon and checked into a lovely forest lodge close to the park gate. After a quick rest, we visited the nearby Kaziranga Orchid Park, which had beautiful flower displays, traditional dance performances, and even a cultural museum.

I ended the day sipping Assamese tea on the lodge balcony, listening to the sounds of the jungle.

Travel Tip: If you're on this tour, carry motion sickness tablets for the winding hill roads.

Day 5: Jeep Safari in Kaziranga – Spotting the One-Horned Rhino

This was hands down the most thrilling day of the trip. I woke up before sunrise for a jeep safari in the Central Range of Kaziranga National Park.

Kaziranga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is world-famous for its population of one-horned rhinoceroses. Within minutes of entering the park, we spotted rhinos grazing in the misty grasslands.

Other wildlife we saw included:

  • Wild elephants

  • Herds of swamp deer

  • Bar-headed geese and hornbills

  • A distant glimpse of a tiger pugmark (though no tiger this time!)

The safari lasted a couple of hours, and it was pure magic. After breakfast back at the lodge, we visited the local tea estates and interacted with some of the workers. In the evening, we went for a sunset safari in the Western Range, where the marshlands looked straight out of a movie.

Wildlife Tip: Book your safari in advance—especially during peak season (Nov–April).

Day 6: Departure from Kaziranga – Ending on a High Note

With a heart full of memories, it was time to head back. We drove to Guwahati for our onward flight, which took about 5 hours from Kaziranga.

On the way, we stopped at a local Assamese dhaba to try thali meals—simple, spicy, and satisfying. If you’ve never had Assamese cuisine before, it’s definitely worth trying.
